Equity and Access – Empowering Ability and Success

Our Definition of Disability

At NZSVET, we align our understanding of disability with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), Article 1, which recognizes that:

"Persons with disabilities include those who have long-term physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impairments which, in interaction with various barriers, may hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others."

This inclusive definition ensures that all students with impairments—whether visible or invisible, temporary or permanent—are eligible for support. By broadening our approach, we aim to:

  • Remove barriersto learning and participation.
  • Collect comprehensive datato tailor support services effectively.
  • Foster an environmentwhere every student can thrive.

We encourage students to disclose any impairments during enrolment or at any point in their studies to access personalized support.

Planning ahead can make a big difference. Here are some important tips to help you get started:

Gather as much information as you can about your chosen course—its structure, workload, assessments, and practical components.

Get in touch with our Student Support Services before you enrol. Booking an early appointment allows us to discuss your needs and organise appropriate support in advance.

When you meet with us, please provide relevant evidence of your disability or impairment. This helps us understand your situation and tailor support to suit you.

Learn what services and adjustments are available to you. These may include assistive technologies, exam accommodations, note-taking support, and more.

Let us know what types of resources, formats, or arrangements might help you—such as alternative print materials, quiet exam rooms, or mobility access.

Take the initiative to address any issues as they arise. Our Disability Support team is here to help you navigate challenges, but your involvement is key.

It’s important to understand your rights under the Human Rights Act 1993. If you need support interpreting this, our team is happy to help.

While we’re here to support you, your success will ultimately depend on your effort, engagement, and willingness to reach out when you need help.
